Easter 2014

Happy Easter! These first few pictures are just a couple days before Easter. We watched Shreyna and Braden's kids so she could get her visiting teaching done. Here are the kids playing together! One day Kayson and Ernest will be best friends...

These are from Easter Sunday. Anita had the cousins on the Paxson side over for an Easter egg hunt.

Right after that the Malnar side showed up for dinner. Nolan came down, which is a rare treat since he lives a little farther north and we all got to meet his latest interest, Kaycee (really I have no idea how to spell it). She was really nice and it's always fun to meet new people!

This last picture of Ernest was actually taken after Easter, but I had to include it because he is wearing the outfit the Easter Bunny brought for him. Last year we didn't see the Easter Bunny in our home, but this year he brought each of us something...maybe you have to have kids to get put on the Easter Bunny's route? We really try to keep the focus of Easter on Christ, so no guarantee he'll get the invite next year, we will just have to wait and see.

Christmas 2013

When we lived in our first tiny apartment we would talk about the day when we would have our own home and could host holidays with our extended family. Well, your wish is my command! We moved into our new house Dec. 1st! Although we had no kitchen... we were as happy as can be. Our kitchen was installed enough to move into it around Dec. 18th. I remember unpacking my kitchen boxes on Christmas Eve day. And then we hosted Christmas. Haha, it was a little crazy! But it was so much fun to have the space to have everyone here. Here are a few pictures from Christmas.

We played out the nativity scene Christmas Eve. I think here we have Joseph and Mary.

Oh Joseph...                                                 And don't forget the animals in the stable!
Just Abi and her crazy faces!

I'm not sure Kayson into the Nativity play but he sure is a cutie!

Our attempt at the family photo. I resisted putting the one in where I am trying to make Ernest smile from behind... you know the one where mom and dad have the cheesiest grins on their faces, and the baby doesn't...

Blessing Pictures

Here are some pretty cute blessing pictures of the one and only Ernest Bond Paxson. I just love his name.
He was blessed on December 1st, 2013 in the Orem Canyon View 7th Ward. He was 2 1/2 months. His outfit was loaned to us by the wonderful Jack Davis of Lindsay and Patrick Davis. Seriously though, she mailed me the outfit because I couldn't find anything that didn't scream ridiculous. Downside: the poor kid will not have a blessing day heirloom to pass on to his children. Upside: I do not have to store said heirloom. He was blessed the day after we moved into our new home. It was a little crazy. Somehow we did it. Mostly Marshall reassured me that it would all work out when I would get into my anxious state, and somehow it really did all work out. In these pictures this kid has dark hair which has lightened up and some killer blue eyes which have stuck around. And the best part? He has no (or very very very little) ezcema! Wahoo! Read more about his blessing here. As a side note, I feel I must mention that I took these pictures with the new camera I got for my Birthday from Marshall, and I edited them almost on my own (Camilia was available for a few questions). Now, I realize these are no where near professional, but for a first time shooter I think they turned out well enough! Enjoy!

What can I say things went a little sour real fast. But man that face is cute...especially when he is upset!

Ernest 4-7 Months

The last three months have been quite the ride. Let me share some of our highlights and low lights.

Ernest started out January like a champ! His sleeping was getting so so good. He would consistently go to sleep between 5-6pm and sleep till 12am or 2am. Then he would have one other feeding in the early morning 4-5am. Then he was up sometime between 7-8am. A few nights we only had one wake up at 4am! Life was bliss and I could almost taste a full night of sleep. He was also getting good at his naps. By mid-January I started doing some sleep training. At this young, all that meant for him is that instead of laying him down dead alseep after nursing him,  I would nurse him first, then swaddle, and lay him in his bed for a story and song. The kid was getting pretty good at falling alseep within a few minutes. He never really cries in his bed, he just grunts. If he did cry, it usually meant his binky fell out and I would run up stick in his mouth and he would be out fairly quick. Not all attempts went this smoothly, but the kid really is independent and since cuddling is NOT his thing he really took to falling alseep on his own.

If I am remembering correctly, January was also when he first rolled over. He has only rolled over a handful of times, mostly because he just doesn't seem interested to do it again. And because he gets frustrated and rubs...which I will get into in a minute.

He has always loved chewing on things...especially our fingers and at four months he was all about chewing on our hands. They were his favorite toys! He also loves silky textures. So tags on blankets and he has a parrot with a silk beak.

As you may remember, Ernest has always had super super dry skin. And the creases in his skin (knees, ankles, etc) would get red, he also had a little red on his cheeks. Maybe it was the beginnings of his ezcema. Towards the end of January it began to flare up and by mid February it was full force here. His cradle cap had intensified and was cracked, red, and weeping. His cheeks were bright red, and at times he would wake up looking close to a tomato. Then at other times he would look better, but still not good. He at times would also have a weeping sore on both or one if his cheeks. He constantly wanted to scratch his eyes, forehead, head, and chest, which really slowed down the healing process. He would wiggle out of his swaddle at night and scratch away. One time I went in to get him in the middle of the night only to find that he had scratched his head so bad and had blood all over his face and head. His sleeping habits were horrible and I ended up bed sharing with him a lot at night and for his naps so that he would get his sleep. I got serious about a swaddle blanket that would contain him, and we now refer to my creation as the straight jacket.

Mid-February I took him in to the Pediatrician, and of course he had just had a flare up. The pediatrician was really nervous that he might have a staph infection and prescribed us an antibiotic and a steroid cream. I was hesitant to give him an antibiotic, especially this young, so I took him to a pediatric dermatologist to get a second opinion. In the meantime we did every natural procedure we could think of and I can't even tell you how many lotions and creams I have bought. The dermatologist was ok with no antibiotic but we did start the steroid cream to help his wounds close up and not weep any more.

It was around this time that I had also heard of food allergies being a trigger for ezcema. The dermatologist told me that ezcema was genetic and he would more likely have food allergies and asthma. He said certain things would cause a flare up and I should avoid those things. But there was no way to know for sure what things would trigger a flare up! I took Ernest to a NAET doctor to see if we could identify anything he was sensitive to (NAET is an eastern way of testing for food sensitivities in someone through muscle testing). He immediately came up sensitive for Dairy and Soy. I stopped eating those immediately and continued for 5 weeks. A couple weeks after that test, I rubbed a little milk on his leg and he immediately broke out in hives. However during those 5 weeks we really didn't see much improvement in his skin. But I was hesitant to add it back into my diet because of the hives. The only thing that seemed to help his cheeks was the steroid cream, and as soon as we stopped using it his cheeks went back to how they were before the cream had been applied. The dermatologist just said it was a long flare up and to keep using the cream.

I hated using the cream on his face. Steroids aren't good for you! Let alone a baby! But I didn't know what else to do for him. Mind you that through all of this we were trying every possible lotion, oil, etc we could think of. The next thing I tried was a probiotic. I am not sure how much that is helping his skin, but it's helping his runny poop that he had had for about 2 weeks. Probiotics can't really be bad for you and we bought him a special infant formula.

The dermatologist also recommended head and shoulders for his scalp. I finally decided to try it, so that I could at least report back to them what happened. Well...his head and face broke out! At that point I really had no idea what to do. I quickly scheduled two more doctors appointment for the next two days. The first one was with a family practice for his 6 month well-ness appointment about a month late. The clinic is called Alpine Clinic in Lehi, and they are more natural minded. They try not to prescribe antibiotics unless necessary, and will give you some natural remedies to try as well. I love it! The day I called they had a cancellation so I was able to take him that day (apparently they are pretty busy, maybe that kind of clinic is in demand and more should open up). He recommended cod liver oil. Sounds gross, but I had had some friends also suggest that, so i went ahead a bought it. I also asked him if a yeast infection could be a possibility (I had another friend suggest that) and he prescribed me an anti-fungal cream to put on his cheeks to see if it helped. He also recommended coconut oil for his scalp, no shampoo, and just rub a washcloth on it in the bath (with only water) and then put more coconut oil on it.

The next doctor I went to specializes in allergies. He is an MD and even though Ernest is too young to check for allergies with modern medicine this MD uses the same theory as NAET except he somehow tests electronically through a computer. Yeah I don't really understand it, but whatever! He came up sensitive to a few different random foods like banana, mushroom, and green pepper. He was also sensitive to dairy, soy, and gluten. I also asked him about the possibility of a yeast infection and he prescribed me an oral anti-fungal medicine and told me to use both and see if it helps. Two doctors saying that yeast infections is a possibility tells me it really is (I was kinda hesitant to go there).

Today is Friday. We started the yeast creams Thursday. His skin is improving! This is the only thing other than the steroid cream that has helped! I am hopeful! And that my friends feels good. The coconut oil (everyone kept telling me to put tea tree oil with it and I did, but that was irritating his skin) on his head is also helping! It's not perfect by any means. He still has dry skin, he still rubs his eyes and head at times (although he has learned to rub with the back of his hands so he doesn't scratch himself), he is still red in his creases, and his cheeks are still red too. BUT it's only been a few days and I haven't seen this big of an improvement in a long time.

The most helpful thing the dermatologist said to me was that caring for ezcema can be like caring for someone with diabetes, in the sense that it is so time consuming. Amen! Seriously! Every second Ernest is awake I am somehow caring for him and his skin (okay maybe I feed him too, but almost every second). Here's the rundown of his day. We wake up around 7:30am, I feed him and then put lotion on his face. We come downstairs and he gets to try to eat some finger food after he takes his fish oil and probiotic. Then he either gets a bath or a rinse off. He then gets lathered down, diaper changed, dressed, swaddles, and nursed to go to sleep and goes down for his first nap around 9am. This is my time to get my 'chores' done. I throw laundry in, sweep the house, clean up our breakfast mess and put the clean dishes away. I also usually try to get some project done if he takes a longer nap. Recently it has been painting baseboards and doors. Then when he wakes up he gets more lotion on his face, we nurse and head downstairs to eat lunch. During this wakeful period we get a little more down time and he gets to play some. Unfortunately I watch him like a hawk during this time to make sure he doesn't rub his face raw. At some point we usually walk outside, get the mail, and sit on the steps and sort it. Ernest enjoys watching the cars and eating any paper or plastic he can get his hands on. Then we repeat the lather, swaddle, nurse and sleep. During this next nap I get to get ready for the day, prep dinner, and continue with whatever projects I have going on. Sometimes I fold or iron laundry. The most stressful part of my day is dinner time. My goal is to have Ernest nursed and dinner ready to serve at 5:30. We try to eat together for dinner, but lots of days Marshall is late getting home or Ernest is headed of to bed too early. But lots of days it works out. We get to eat dinner, I will bathe him if he needs it or just rinse him, he gets lathered down again, supplements again, and somewhere in the mix he gets to play with Dad.  Then off to nurse and off to bed. Then I spend time cleaning the kitchen while Marshall begins his projects on the house. Ernest will wake up anywhere from 0-3 times before 11pm. Needless to say by the time I crawl into bed I am pretty pooped.

But I digress this post is about Ernest...

He loves patty cake, he will put his hands on the outside of my hands and clap with me as I sing. And the other day, after doing it once with me and once with Marshall, he put one hand on my hand and one on Marshall's and had us do it together. So cute. Melt my heart. He loves the Eensy Weensy Spider and is ticklish on his tummy and back. He still loves to jump and stand! And because he gets limited tummy time due to rubbing his face, he is no where close to crawling. Which is ok with me. He loves D'mar's hair and is always trying to touch and grab it. He loves to blow bubbles and will get entranced with the different ways I can move my lips and the noises I can make. He wants to put anything that he grabs into his mouth. He still rubs his face and head, but it is nice to know that he has learned scratching those hurts. He will put his right hand all the way behind his back and scratch his own back. Silly boy. He loves people, people watching and is so so observant. I have had to nurse him a few times while waiting for the Doctor to come in. As soon as he hears another voice he pops off and has to look at this new person and new voice. While he is still not a cuddler, the other day Grandma Paxson had him and was nuzzling the back of his neck, and he rested his cheek on her shoulder. So cute. He can get pretty loud when he talks and usually does that the most when people are around...so church can get pretty noisy with him.

Recently we started giving him finger foods to chew on. He has pretty much liked them all, except it did take a time or two to get used to avocado, but he is a fan after all. So far he has had soft carrots and sweet potatoes, avocado, banana (which he may be reacting to, so no more for him), apples, oatmeal, strawberries, and a few tastes of a green smoothies I made, which he LOVED! He doesn't really get a lot in his mouth, or he spits it out if he does. But it is fun to see him experiment. And I think after a month of it, he is starting to get the idea of what mealtime is all about. He does the same grunting when he sees  that we are getting ready to feed him in the kitchen as when I am getting ready to nurse him in his room.

All in all, the kid is awesome. Such a pleasure to be around. We are so lucky to have him! And even though I am sure he has just been so miserable with the skin stuff, he is still pretty darn happy! We are so lucky to have him! And love him so much! And here are the pictures you have all been waiting for! When his face really flares up I tend to shy away from pictures...how's that for a disclaimer?

4 months old playing with Dad. This is before the ezcema made it's appearance.

He loves to chew on fingers!
5 months. Ezcema has arrived, but this is a good day and a good angle.

First food at 6 months. We are doing baby led weaning and his first food was carrots!

At 6 1/2 months this is the closest thing to a cuddle we can get!

 He loves cucumbers too!
And while it took him a minute to warm up to avocados, it was lots of fun seeing the mess he made!

Too Cute not to Share

Fine. I'm giving in. I'm going to do it. Maybe not every month or about everything. But at least something once in a while, because I guess this is the best place to document Ernest's happenings for family and friends to see.

Ernest is already more than three months old! As any new parents would be, we are just loving our little guy! It amazes me that his personality is already shining through, so here are a few things unique to him.

Despite minimal tummy time, Ernest is really good at holding his head up and has been since the beginning. I think I stopped supporting his head after 3-4 weeks (at least most of the time any way). At his two month appointment he was already sitting in his bumbo (which actually happened when he was 2 months 2 weeks). And that's when we found out his head is only in the 25th percentile. And all this time we just thought he was super strong ;)

Ernest has also enjoyed standing from about day one. It's his favorite position! He is also mots alert when he is standing. He has some strong legs!

He loves to eat and takes his sweet time eating. Feedings can take any where from 10 min to an hour. And he would take every nap camped out at my breast if I let him. We like to think he takes after his Grandpa Paxson (who he is named after). He took a long time to eat as well.

Ernest has some really dry skin (like Grandpa Paxson as well) and some professional cradle cap. I only bath him twice a week so that his body and scalp won't dry out quite as much. Ernest is not much of a fan of bath time. He rarely cries during it, but just has a disgusted look on his face the whole time.

We also rub him down every night with olive oil as part of his nightly bedtime routine. He LOVES it! It's probably his favorite part of the day! He can be super tired, and a little ornery, but the second you lay him down on the changing table he is all smiles. He loves all of it! He loves taking his clothes off! He loves his body massage! And even though he is not too keen on tummy time he loves it when I lay him on his tummy and rub his back. He loves his diaper getting changed (he actually enjoys this most of the time as well). And then I'll usually play with him for a minute or two, moving his arms and legs and he is all smiles. Then I put his pajamas on. And while he loves dressing and undressing the second you get his clothes on him he goes back to being fussy. It's so interesting, and cute!

He doesn't spit up too much. Drools like he is teething (usually in the afternoon). Very alert, and always looking around. Loves sucking his hand, but will take a pacifier if he is tired. Pretty mellow temperament. He hardly ever cries hard, but instead whimpers. At 3 months 2 weeks he shows zero interest in food. I can't wait till he does, but we're in no hurry. Takes pretty short naps, but sometimes I get a good one out of him. And he sleeps better during the day on me.

He's always been a pretty good sleeper at night. Right now he goes to bed around 5:30 or 6, and wakes up once or twice throughout the night. Sometimes he is awake for the day at 5:30, but we've been working to make it 6:30 instead and he seems to be changing. Then I pull him into bed with me and we nurse/co-sleep for another hour. I'm so lucky to have such a good sleeper. He sleeps in his own room. And we enjoy our evenings without him ;) and our days with him!

Well there you go. If you haven't had the opportunity to meet the little guy, hopefully you'll feel like you have through this post. And here are a few pictures of the little guy from 3-4 months. Unfortunately I don't have a lot of pictures after the newborn stage to the 3 month stage because we were so busy fixing the house, packing, sanding, and moving. Here is what I do have!

Halloween! 2 1/2 Months
 Just shy of 3 months

Bath Time! Well, more accurately his rub down after bath time. He loved it!

He always had his 'whole' fist in his mouth!

It is what it is (and this is what it is)

2 weeks till Christmas and we have not bought a single, present or even thought about what to get anyone. This is not because we don't love you or because you are not important to us. It is because we are so dang busy trying to finish the kitchen, unpack, get the apartment ready to rent by Jan. 1st, and with life that buying presents is getting pushed back. Ugh! I may or may not also be procrastinating the gift buying because thinking of what to get people just does not come easy for me.

Tiling is hard. And it takes forever! And grout is near impossible to completely wipe up.

Today I left Ernest with Marshall and I headed to the dentist. And even though he has done it before, the little guy wouldn't drink from his bottle or settle down. Being able to calm a baby instantly is nice! Knowing that I go back to work in a month and I won't be able to rush home to feed a cuddle him is not quite so nice.

Our fridge is currently in the garage. And while it is super cold any time we have to venture out together some food that my friends is not the worst part. The worst part is that it is so cold that the food in our fridge is freezing. And not because we have the fridge temperature set too low!

I can't wait to a) unpack my kitchen stuff and b) have a kitchen to use! One more week tops and I'll have an almost complete kitchen (I'll still need to sand and paint the kitchen cabinets but that won't hold be back from unpacking!)!

We had a whole week where we didn't have the internet once we moved. Here is what I learned: we use the internet to communicate a lot, and that is good. I missed knowing what was going on in people's lives (I really should get better at calling people). I found out that while entertainment (TV shows, YouTube videos, etc) is fun, it in no way contributes to my happiness level and I would say could easily decrease my state of happiness as it often leaves people feelin disconnected from their real life and the people in it. I love that I can download books! I like to read! I'm how
Isn't i can do a better job not wasting time on my ipad. I'm also grateful to have it, as I spend a lot of time nursing now a days. And while I have friends whose babies eat in like 5-10 minutes, my son is NOT one of those. A 20 min session would be considered short to him!

Here's something I don't understand. How do these moms have time to do a cute photo shoot of their child every week (exaggeration, I'm sure)? Seriously! My little guy is lucky if he gets a bath once a week (exaggeration, I hope). I keep telling myself to take some darn photos cause he'll only be 2 months and 3 weeks once! At least I put the camera in the living area for easy access... One step at a time I guess!

I recently read in a book that only 10% of our happiness comes from our situation/circumstance. 50% is our disposition and 40% is what we do. It's got me thinking about what I do to be happy. Reading my scriptures, positive thinking and self talk, connecting with those I love, working, serving, and then relaxing, GRATITUDE, church, hobbies, were just a few of my thoughts.

So I'm curious what do you do to be happy? You may or may not realize you do it to be happy, but you'd be surprised how many people keep doing things that don't contribute to their own happiness (this book specifically mentioned that TV does not contribute to our happiness). I think the first step is identifying what we are doing that is working. What makes you happy?

Ernest's Blessing

On December 1st Ernest was blessed. It was such a sweet blessing and I wanted to share some of my favorite parts.

Marshall blessed him to have a clarity and sharpness of mind and sensitivity to the spirit. That he would help those around him feel comfortable. That as he gains knowledge it will bring him happiness. He blessed him to serve a mission, and then many missions. That he would be a force for good to those he comes in contact with. He blessed him with the gift of gratitude that he would be able to see the good in all situations and to be able to see the Lord's hand in his life daily. He blessed him with the gift of love for those with whom he associates including his parents, siblings, other family and friends. And he blessed him to be able to learn from his experiences to become stronger and more like the person he wants to become.

What a neat blessing huh? Marshall talked slow enough that I was able to take pretty good notes. I love that he blesses him to help those around him feel comfortable. I don't necessarily think that is some thing i am blessed with, but it is something that is important to me and something that I work on.  I want my home to be a place where all our welcome and all feel comfortable. I have definitely improved in this area, but I still have a ways to go.

I also love that he was blessed with the gift of gratitude. Gratitude is something that is really important to Marshall and I. I can't say I have always been the most grateful person growing up. It's a good thing change is possible! This is what I know about being grateful: grateful people are happy people. And while happy people may just naturally be more grateful, I know that if you are unhappy and work to sincerely be more grateful you will be happier. I know that gratitude keeps you humble, and allows you to acknowledge the Lord's hand in your life. It keeps you listening to Him and I believe makes it easier for Him to guide you and continue to bless you! I also know that I enjoy being around grateful people. If you want people to enjoy your company be grateful! I also want to give, serve, and help those who are more grateful. It makes me feel like whatever I had done for them was appreciated and makes me want to do more.

I also loved watching all of the men walking up to participate in the blessing. I am so grateful for all the great men, friends and family, that Ernest has to look up to. There was a power felt as I watched that circle of men bless my son, and I was so grateful! We are also so blessed that so many of our friends and family were able to attend. Not everyone was there that we wanted, but we had so much support on this special day! We couldn't ask for more!

Those were my favorites. I am so excited to see this little guy grow up and show me who he is. He is already such a joy to us. We love his smiles and laughs, the sounds he makes (he can be pretty vocal when he wants to be), his big blue eyes, his happy personality, and how strong he is (this guy has been holding his head up on his own for long long time-which is saying a lot cause I haven't been to great about tummy time). Who knows he may help me be a better blogger (as he lays on sleeping while I write this), I guess we'll see.
